Top Rank Bingo Finsbury Park, Stroud Green Road Background And History

At the moment we do not have details of the events that led up to, or any of the circumstances surrounding the closure of Top Rank Bingo Finsbury Park. We do however know a bit about the venue's history.

The Rink Cinema opened in 1909, and with 2,800 seats was one of London's larger cinemas. The result of the combining of two buildings, it had its own cafe/restaurant: in 1920 the Cinematograph Theatre was integrated into the main building as a foyer, having been built in 1909, but only lasting as a cinema for six years.

The resulting Rink Cinema was the first cinema in Britain to display the De Forest Phonofilms ‘sound on film’ system (1923), and had a Wurlitzer installed in 1926. Gaumont took over in 1929, but didn't rename the cinema until 1958. Closing in the same year, it reopened months later as the Majestic Ballroom, which only lasted into the early sixties, when Top Rank took over and converted it into a bingo hall.

Bingo closed down in 1994, but luckily was moved to another venue in Wood Green. Of the two original buildings the Rink Cinema remains although it is now a bowling alley, but unfortunately, the Cinematograph was demolished, and replaced with a supermarket.
