Mecca Bingo Erith, High Street Background And History
At the moment we do not have details of the events that led up to, or any of the circumstances surrounding the closure of Mecca Bingo Erith. We do however know a bit about the venue's history.
Erith Odeon opened in 1938 with seating for over 1,200 patrons. It's shame that we don't have a photo of the original cinema, as it had a massive 'fin', and must have been quite an impressive building in its day. The interior was of Art Deco design, and included decorative plasterwork, and a back-lit lighting scheme.
It was renamed the Classic Cinema in 1967 when it was taken over by the chain of the same name. In the early seventies the cinema was split to accommodate Mecca Bingo, which operated in the stalls. Mecca took over the building entirely in 1974, and was one of the rare instances where Mecca kept the cinema side of the business open concurrent with bingo.
The cinema side of the business eventually folded in 1976, and the bingo element in 1995 when Jasmine Bingo took over. Like many of the Jasmine takeovers, it didn't last long, only a year before closing. The building has now been demolished, and replaced with modern buildings.
