Mecca Bingo Clapham, High Street Background And History
At the moment we do not have details of the events that led up to, or any of the circumstances surrounding the closure of Mecca Bingo Clapham, but we do know a bit about the venue's past.
Originally opened in 1914, the Majestic Theatre, with over 1,500 seats was a fair size venue, although not one of the larger London theatres. I was however designed by a cinema architect John Stanley Beard, who was one of several renowned designers. Although the front of the venue is quite small, the auditorium stretched back behind the other adjacent businesses.
It was taken over in 1928, and again in 1929, the latter takeover adding it to the then swelling ranks of the Gaumont British Cinemas circuit.
The company made improvements including the installation of a Compton 3Manual/8Ranks organ. The cinema suffered minor damage during the war, and was open for business again in 1941. It continued to show films until 1960, by which time it had been renamed the Gaumont. After a nine year gap, the auditorium was opened up for bingo which ceased in 1983. We know that at one point Mecca were the owners, but there may have been other owners during its time as a bingo hall.
If you have any details that may assist us, and you would like to share them with our readers, we would love to hear from you.

This was actually known as Mecca, Battersea Rise, although situated in Clapham Junction. It changed to a snooker hall before closing. I believe it is now a pub. It's big sister was The Grand, Mecca Clapham Junction, on St John's Hill, just yards down the hill from Granada Clapham Junction. I worked at both in the 80's. The Grand is now a music venue.
