Mecca Bingo Gloucester, Barton Street Background And History
At the moment we do not have details of the events that led up to, or any of the circumstances surrounding the closure of Mecca Bingo Gloucester. We do however know a bit about the venue's history.
The venue opened initially as Palmer’s Picturedrome in 1923, a small venue with seating for only 700. The interior design is Rococo, which includes plaster ceiling panels. Like many other cinemas in the era it was taken over by ABC (1943) under whose ownership it underwent exterior modernisation, and a change of name to Ritz. The Ritz was temporarily closed from between April and June 1961, and then permanently in 1962.
Straightaway the club was converted and became the Alpha Bingo Club, which Mecca Bingo took over in 1968. Mecca Bingo closed in 1984, and following this the premises were bought by a local Operatic & Dramatic Society, and since then, films are also being shown at the venue.
