Crown Bingo Eccles, Church Street Background And History

We are not sure about what happened to the bingo hall, but we have gleaned some information about the venue's history prior to bingo. Opening in 1899, the Lyceum Theatre, and with a seating capacity for 2,500, it must have been one of the biggest theatres in the UK at the time.

The structure had an impressive three tiers, and was apparently very well decorated. Undergoing a change of ownership, and name to Crown Theatre in 1907, the venue continued to stage variety and other forms of entertainment until it became a cinema in 1932.

Having undergone another change of ownership in 1955, it continued to show films until bingo took over in 1963. We think it closed as a bingo hall around 2000, but are not sure why. If you have any further details that may assist us, and you would like to share them with our readers, we would love to hear from you. If you let us know what you know, we will put the details online with your name credited (if you wish, or we can credit the article as anonymous). You will be doing a service to the bingo community and posterity by helping us record details of all Britain's bingo clubs and halls. Thank you.
