Lucky Seven Bingo Cambridge, Dartford Road Background And History
Lucky Seven Bingo did not have a lengthy existence, and for a classic cinema it was a bit of a late starter, not opening until 1928, when it debuted as the Cambridge Hippodrome. A medium sized venue, it nevertheless had five dressing rooms to cope with the influx of visiting performers.
The cinema survived the wave of ABC Cinema takeovers, but was eventually taken over by Star Cinemas in the nineteen sixties, Star being the last cinema owners when the venue closed in 1970 for a bingo changeover. Films did make a return to the venue in tandem with bingo nights until 2009 when bingo became the sole entertainment function within the venue until the club's closure circa 2010.
At time of print the building has been purchased for pub conversion by Wetherspoons, who are quite likely to do their best to retain as much of the venue's original features as is feasible (hopefully).
