Top Ten Bingo Blackwood, High Street Background And History
Blackwood Top Ten Bingo was originally opened as the Maxime Cinema in around 1939. Equipped with a 30 feet wide proscenium, and seating for 1,400 it had started dually running bingo by 1976 under new ownership of the Jackson Withers circuit. Rank bought them out in 1976, however, cinema screenings only lasted another twelve years before it converted to full time bingo. Its previous owners have include both Top Rank and Mecca Bingo. Although bingo operated downstairs, we do not know what became of the cinemas that operated in the circles area.
The venue was purchased by Picturedrome Cinemas who intend to convert the bingo hall back into a cinema, which is something of a rarity, bingo halls that were once cinemas don't usually get converted back. At the time of writing plans for the conversion had not been submitted to the council, but as soon as we get further news we will update this page.

Picturedome Cinemas opened the Maxime Cinema on August the 6th and it is Blackwood's only cinema. The first film to be shown was the haunted house thriller 'Blackwood'. Hopefully the cinema will be a success, and the building remain a source of local entertainment.
