Plaza Bingo Birkenhead, Borough Road Background And History
We are not sure exactly what happened to the bingo club, but we do know a bit about the building's past. With 2,560 seats, and opening in 1930, the Plaza Theatre was one of the biggest of its era. It had a Neo-Classical exterior, and the interior was Art Deco style. A fully equiped theatre, with a 40 foot proscenium, it suffered bomb damage during WW2. Bingo entered the building in the mid sixties on a part time basis before the premises reverted to cinema use. The last film was shown in 1973 when it was converted to a bingo club. Operated by Mecca Bingo, we are not sure of the club's operating name. Closed in 1997, the building has been demolished

Club Memories
The Plaza was a cinema for many years I remember going as a 10 / 11 year old (now 55) "we used to pool our money - one of us would buy the ticket and then open the emergency exit into an aread we called the "tossies" and let the other lads and girls in. Eventually changed to a bingo hall and we used to go there as on a Friday & Saturday they used to have a group on and we could dance and have beer that was great as a young 18 year old.
