Bingo Bees Encourage Irresponsible Gambling

My latest review of yet another "Castle Bingo Club".

THE POSITIVES: A bright and cheerful decor well in keeping with the "Castle Leisure" chain. Food & drink & snacks are on par from what is to be expected at all Castle clubs, in as much as they're tasty, hot (not lukewarm)and competitively priced. The staff are friendly but not too accommodating as they have to be pushed a bit, but they're by no means rude, more like reserved.

Ken the mini-cash bingo caller (who comes from beautiful Scotland) has a good clear delivery of numbers (even with his great accent) though he does run hot & cold with the speed of his calling. Prize money across all games is good, and a lot better than some Castle clubs I've visited. (Why can't the Castle "Powers that be" ensure that all their clubs pay out the same ratio of prize money)?

THE NEGATIVES: #1. Car parking is a bit scattered around the site, with some vehicles parking fully on the pavements/grass verges. There's one way in and one way out (very narrow) of the car park, and can be a bit of a "rat race" to leave at the end of the sessions.

#2. At the start of each session the caller announces that "all mobile phones must be switched off or put on silent mode", sadly each session has at least 3 or 4 that still ring and the staff do nothing about the spoiling of players concentration.

#3. The club promotes (indeed PUSHES) the use of the new "Bingo Bee" electronic gaming machines. These types of machines will always be out of favour with me because they very seriously encourage IRRESPONSIBLE GAMBLING!

I'll explain: On Sunday evening 3rd April, a full set of paper books cost £16.50, with the maximum of 6 books per section (Teaser, early, main & late) but, and this WILL SHOCK MANY READERS, the cost of the "Bingo Bee" machines were as follows:

Play 18 with 36 Main (that's 6 TIMES MORE than a paper book!) cost £46.00. Play 18 with 54 Main (9 TIMES MORE) cost &70.50, Play 18 with 72 Main (12 TIMES MORE) cost £94.50, and finally play 72 of everything = 12 BOOKS of TEAZER, 12 BOOKS of EARLY, 12 BOOKS of MAIN, 12 PAGES of LATE FLIER & 12 BOOKS OF LATES, wait for it... 134.50! ONE HUNDRED & THIRTY FOUR POUNDS & FIFTY PENCE!

Who on Earth could mark 2 sets of books let alone 12, yes TWELVE sets of books that the Bingo Bee machine players are allowed to do? Where in the name of sanity does RESPONSIBLE GAMBLING come into all this?

You have to ask if Castle Club owners aren't interested in whether someone spends their mortgage/rent money, or grocery money or whatever money that could cause great hardship to them, because encouraging vast amounts of money (to chase a win) to be spent on these machines is frankly nothing less than gross irresponsibility.

The average books in play on Sunday were: Paper books 59%, virtual books (Bingo Bee) 41% but the win ratio was 60/40 in favour of the "Bingo Bees", this means that there were LESS virtual books in play than paper books yet MORE cash prizes were paid out to virtual book (Bingo Bee) players, so again, you have to seriously question the integrity of the Bingo Bee machines, leading people to gamble much more because Bingo Bees are seemed (allegedly) to be favoured over paper books by the Random Number Generator.

I understand that eventually all Castle clubs will offer Bingo Bees to players, thereby swelling the coffers of the club owners. Why oh why aren't they more strictly regulated. I'll be sending a copy of this review to the gambling commission at:

I can only give this club 2/5 as a rating.
