Club Background And History
Canton Castle Bingo was the first purpose built bingo venue in the UK. A fairly large venue, it has IBingo and many other facilities including a bar and eaterie. Its easy to get to by public transport, although parking can be a bit difficult in the area at times. It's just a stones throw from the centre of the City, so a great place to visit and take in a few sights. A very busy venue, it is located in the heart of the Canton district of Cardiff, alongside a row of shops, bars, and restaurants.

Modern And Fun But Not Perfect
The club on Cowbridge Road East is a modern pup rose built Bingo Hall just outside Cardiff's centre. Whilst it has been built specifically for Bingo by the South Wales Castle Bingo chain, it suffers a few minor problems which detract from its overall appeal.
Firstly it's cramped, the rows seem narrow and the tables quite small and cramped. The seating is on two floors. In places with all the extras like bandits and that it feels quite tight and oppressive.
On the plus side the money is always good and the atmosphere is fun - always something I find lacking in purpose built modern clubs. Despite being a modern club, it feels quite old, despite some bland fittings and fixtures. I think the balcony helps that feel. It's always been busy when I've been there and the calling is top notch, but occasionally on the speedy side. A problem with all modern clubs as they rush through to get as many Party Bingo games in the interval as possible.
Staff and special offers are excellent, like all Castle clubs - overall the impression is good, the staff friendly and helpful (the manager arranged free bubbly for a party of first timers I took there once) but one or two minor niggles stop it from being top notch.
As a non-smoker, one of the worst is the lack of a decent no smoking area. Whilst there's one in the balcony, its pointless given the amount of smoke wafting up from the downstairs.
It also lacks any real visual appeal. There's no grand old architecture to admire and some of the fittings have seen better days. Overall though, it's one club I will be returning too.

Complaints About Staff
Well the Castle Bingo is horrible as staff ain't polite and they are very very rude so that's why I travel all the way up to Bridgend as staff up there are very, very polite and they are welcoming and they chat as well. I think if you want to keep your customers treat them with respect and be polite, not rude. Thank you for taking your time to read this.

Hard To Be Positive
I've tried exhaustively to find something positive about this club, but have been unable to do so. I'll have to go straight to the negatives. Negatives. The club DOES NOT have its own car park. There is a car park to the rear but it doesn't belong to Castle Bingo, so park there at your own risk.
The interior is split over 2 floors, but even then it's still cramped and imposing. The prize money is mediocre, nothing special, or worth traveling for. Castle has 8 Bingo clubs in South Wales, the staff at Canton Cardiff do just as much as they have to and no more and some do a lot less. I won't name any member of staff as they aren't able to defend themselves here but, the manager I spoke to had a supercilious air about him, and he just couldn't care less.
I haven't tried the food & drink, but I assume it should be on par with all Castle bingo clubs, though I'll let you decide that. In common with all Castle Bingo clubs (and a growing number of others) Canton offer GameMate machines to players and on the last night that I played there no less than 18 consecutive claims were made exclusively by GameMate players, so 1 x line, 1 x full house 9 games in succession, not one paper book made a claim. Maybe this was the exception rather than the rule, but in this and the other 7 clubs, such machines do appear to win an inordinate amount of prizes.
I've visited and will be reviewing all of Castle Bingo's clubs in South Wales over the next few weeks. I will continue to visit and play at them all as often as possible, and will be monitoring the win ratio between paper books and the wireless gaming machines, and I hope that next time I visit Castle Bingo Canton Cardiff, that they will have "upped" their game, and worked hard on their "customer relation" skills. On this occasion I can give this club 1 out of 5. There's room for vast improvement.

I find it amusing that there is a poor review from a certain K. Ballatine for every club in South Wales criticising the electronic offering. Coincidence maybe, but could be sour grapes? I have visited Castle Canton over the past 7 years and have always found it to be the friendliest around. Staff know us members by name and currently have the best management team for some time. Maybe if K. Ballatine had spent some time in experiencing the atmosphere in the club rather than critiquing the paper v electronic debate then the rating would be higher. Castle Canton is an old fashioned, new build club that we all enjoy.

My last visit!
Well, I've now played at this club for the third & last time, hoping to see some improvement and sadly, this was not the case. Anon April 2011 (I love these anonymous reviewers) must be either a gamemate/bingo bee player, or a member of staff trying to earn some brownie points.
The Staff:(All of whom could learn a lot from the Bridgend staff) Well within earshot of myself and partner 2 staff members used the "F" word several times, and when we raised our hands for change for the mini bingo they simply carried on talking to each other as if we weren't there. If this club has the "best management team in ages" I shudder to think how bad the earlier ones were.
The electronic gaming machines: "Castle Leisure promotes fair gaming practice". Really? How can allowing multiple sets of books to be played on such machines encourage either fair play or responsible gambling? These machines have their place for people who are otherwise unable to use a pen or dabber, but able bodied people are just being greedy i.e. 4 sets of books (24 books in all) so, they're hoping (and more often than not succeed) that they have 4 times the chance of a paper book player. Pure greed with no excuse. If these money making machines are to be allowed in play, why can't they be limited to the most number of books that a normal but very quick player could mark, i.e. 2 and NO MORE.
Experiencing the atmosphere? Well, again cramped, with players talking loudly above the callers, mobile phones ringing regularly during the sessions (none of the staff seem bothered). I'm afraid this club needs a good kick up the backside. It is still leaving a lot to be desired.
By the way, not all my reviews of Castle Clubs are bad you should read my review for Usk Way, which if it weren't for the distance from my home this would be my preferred club to play at, and yes the only gripe I had there was my usual one about Gamemates. Many states in America have totally banned such devices in their clubs, so ask yourself why. You'll be pleased to know that I'll not be putting in a fourth appearance at this club, as I've seen more than enough over 3 visits. Sadly, this club keeps it's 1 out of 5 rating from me.

Staff Professionalism Issues
I have been going to this club for many years and I don't know what the hell has been going on there lately. In the last twelve months they have lost about six good callers and other members of staff. But to my total shock was the behaviour of a club manager. She came in from the back fire exit, wobbled down the isle to the front calling stand and I heard her say "what the f#@k is going on with this stage? The new caller which I believe is a former Mecca caller turned round and said "do you mind not talking to me like that in front of everybody? If you want a word then please take me to one side and speak to me" this is not new for the caller to behave like that. I have seen her cause riots in there. But I felt sorry for the staff who had been working flat out to give change as it was a busy Wednesday afternoon. I she was that bothered she should have done it herself? For some reason they cant keep staff anymore. But why work there only to have the abuse from the likes of that woman about the house keeping. The problem is that up in club 3000 in Cardiff the general manager is just the same. I don't play bingo in clubs in the area now. I go online and get what I want straight away. And I wont be playing on club 3000 or castle web sights either!!
