The Ritz was a cinema with 555 split between 333 in the stalls and 222 on the balcony. It was owned and operated by The Star Group of Leeds and was a cine/bingo operation, bingo played Tuesday and Thursday evening and cinema the rest of the week. The bingo equipment had to be set up before ever session. In 1971 it closed for conversion to a twin screen cinema in the balcony and full time bingo in the stalls. The conversion took 6 weeks and was the first twin screen cinema out of London. The building was taken over by EMI and continued under there management until 1978 when the club was taken over by Silverline Entertainments of Newark On Trent. Silverline ran the club until 1992 when the the then manager Ivan Varney and myself took over and renamed it Bingorama. We ran the club for 11 years until 2003 and moved to Blackpool and brought a hotel. We sold the club to Regal Leisure (I think) they also owned The Regal Staveley, The Kings Gainsbrough and The Byron Hucknall. The whole of the circuit was then leased to Stylus Sports this was short lived and they gave up the clubs. The Belper club was taken over by a new operator Rodger Withnall who still runs the club today.
