When my son was almost 7 we were driving along in the car and he announced that he was gay. I was so worried about saying the wrong thing, so I just said 'that's interesting' and I asked a few questions which revealed that he knew exactly what it meant. My husband adapted to the news less comfortably, but I made him promise not to discuss it unless my son introduced the subject. Two or three weeks later my son commented on a pretty young lady on TV, I commented that I thought he was gay. He carefully explained that he had only said that to stop people teasing him about liking a girl in his class! Why does he make everything so complicated?

Oh dear. My son used to do about the same. I remember one very strained Thanksgiving, after everyone had filled their places and there was no place to hide. He introduced the subject of the differing religious persuasions practiced by people sitting around the table. He thought since everyone was there, he'd bring it from. My husband quietly told him we'd talk about it later. That was one quiet Thanksgiving...
