School Holidays

We needed a totally restful weekend and that's what we gave ourselves, I can hardly believe it! We were going to see the Dark Knight over the weekend, but we rested thru that as well. Will be seeing it soon..!

It was so hot and uncomfortable here that we didn't get much done, everything seemed too exhausting. My son said there were a couple of scary bits in the Dark Knight, but he thought it was a brilliant film. It makes a change to hear him sound enthusiastic about something, 13 year olds don't seem to do enthusiasm.

We're miles from the nearest cinema, but we have a guest who's come to stay with loads of DVDs so my eldest is in seventh heaven.

I have to sons and they seem to be always bored. I couldn't tell you how many times I have heard "I am bored". Are there any pools or water slides, parks things like that you could take him to?

I might've been a "mean mama" as my children are wont to say at times, but I always told them that I wasn't responsible for their boredom; that showed a lack of imagination on their part. If they were really looking for something to do, they could clean their rooms or load the dishwasher, or...suddenly they'd find something fantastic to do! I do sound very mean, reading this back. Both of them, though, make a tidy sum relying on said imagination...hey, where's my cut?

My son uses his imagination every day - to think up implausible excuses to explain why he hasn't tidied his room, made his bed, put his washing away etc!!

It's like job training, I think, Just. It used to bother my mum something terrible that our son could laze on his bed for the better part of a day reading his Spiderman comics. I told her that was job training as well.

I really wasn't prepared to parent boys, I went to an all girls school, I had a brother but he was so much younger than me that I was away studying by the time he became a teenager. When my step son came to live with us I got on very well with him on one level but I was mystified by the way he seemed to live in a constant dream. You would send him to have a shower and he would still be there 20 minutes later still gazing into the mirror and wondering what he went upstairs for. He would sleep all day if we let him and he would communicate in monosyllables unless you happened to mention his favourite subject (computer games) then he would talk animatedly for hours on end until everyone was bored rigid. It felt like living with an alien.

The locusts comment was dead on describing when my kids lived at home. We tried to have snacks for them, but they were decimated. We'd go shopping and the next day there would be no food. One of my husband's favourite memories of our daughter (well, favourite now)was one day coming home after work and he stopped and bought a two pound salad on sale. Our daughter took the bag from him, looked inside, and said, "Cool, I've been wanting some salad", took it into the kitchen, poured dressing all over the salad, plopped onto the floor in front of the TV, and ate the whole thing!

My oldest daughter went off to university last September. We noticed a big drop in the amount of loo roll we used and the bath products and shower gel lasted twice as long. She is back for the summer and suddenly there has been a sharp rise in the consumption of bathroom products.

My daughter as well used to go through bathroom supplies at lightning speed. I have a silent chuckle when I hear her telling her kids that you don't have to use that much loo paper, and one squirt of soap washes your hands as well as a whole palm full.
