Default Personal Experiences with Bingo Addiction

So I was wondering if anyone on here has dealt with someone that is addicted to bingo or gambling of any type. How do you help a person who is going through this when it is so prevalent nowadays?

It's funny these days how there's a big stink about online gambling addiction, and rightly there's lots of concern and support. But I find it strange that in the retail space there's next to no controls at all. I remember watching people play at the hall I worked at, the ones there everyday and thinking they must have had some problem, but it's not something that the retail industry ever addresses. There's a lot more protection and self help available online these days, with things like self exclusion policies, monitoring and advice. If anything I would say land based Bingo could learn a lot from its online cousin in respect of helping people with gambling addiction.

As to describing it as prevalent, according to recent figures problem gamblers have remained at the same level the last decade or so. In any aspect of life people can become addicted, be it ebay, bingo or food. It's a shame Bingo gets such a bad press from the moralists out there. Moralising can be addictive too!

In my previous employment I came into contact with clients with various addictions including gambling. I have worked with a number of people with an addiction to slot machines and also with several who had serious problems with online gambling, but I have not encountered anyone who was specifically addicted to bingo. I suspect there has always been problem gambling of one kind or another. We can only have a certain amount of safeguards otherwise it would become a 'nanny state', after all we don't ban smoking and we know that is dangerous. In the end people have to find the strength and support to make the right choices for their life and for some the only safe option is abstinence.

I've no personal experience of Bingo or gambling addiction but imagine that it must be quite hard to become addicted to 'real' Bingo as you have to stop when the caller stops. Unless you live somewhere where there is 24 hour bingo, you're addiction is limited by what's available.

I was in no way suggesting banning it. I am just curious if anyone knew anyone that was actually addicted to bingo? Thanks for sharing.
