My mum has always been a quite indulgent granny. When my son became a toddler and you had to start telling him No, my mother would watch my son grab one of her knicknacks (she would have murdered any of her kids who touched them) and she would smile at him and say,"No-nee, no-nee, no!"
I might be a bit overly indulgent with my grandkids, but she has me beat!

I was a a toy superstore this evening and I saw a couple with a girl aged about 5. They watched as she took all the large soft toys off the shelves and threw them on to the floor. They didn't say a word to her, they just wanderer off and she followed dragging a large soft to horse along behind her. She stopped to tear another toy out of it's packet, then she wandered on still dragging the horse. Her parents didn't even notice, they were busy looking at something else. I lost track of them until they got to the checkout when I spotted them again. By this time the horse was dirty and she had chewed it's ear. The father took it away from her, plonked it on the counter and said that they didn't want it. I may not be a perfect parent, but my children knew how to behave when out. That child had obviously been allowed to do whatever she liked!

It's not doing any favours to kids when parents don't give them any boundaries and let them have their own way in everything. With our kids, we were quite strict with them when they were small, especially that they needed to come to us when we called them, and certainly not to run in the opposite direction (their dad had a bit of a phobia that if the kids ran away, they'd run into the street) . As they grew, we got less and less strict with them, until about the time they were older teens we gave them their heads and they did really well. I can't claim alot of credit with this; their dad was always consistent in making them mind, and they were good kids anyway.

Mine have been brought up in much the same way. They had boundaries and they knew how to behave in shops, if they touched things or had a tantrum because they wanted things I just took them out of the shop and we went straight home. They soon learned. They may have their moments at home but I know I can trust them to behave well when they are out.

My boys are the same way. A couple times of leaving the store without anything and they realized that I meant business that I would take them to the car and we would leave and I would go by myself and now they know.

Do your kids ever watch in amazement when some kid is running wild in a store? My kid's eyes would be big as saucers watching some other kid throwing a tantrum or answering back to their parents.

I think mine have been quite shocked by the way some parents speak to their children. I can honestly say that however cross I have been I have never subjected my child to a torrent of verbal abuse. Some children are set a very bad example.

My washing up pile has reached monumental proportions, and we've run out of clean stuff. Last night, I'm embarrassed to admit, we ate our tea from the lids of the tupperware *blush*
