Molly, that brought back memories! I think little boys find it harder when it comes to potty training. When my son finally got the idea he took an obsessive interest in what he produced and he would invite everyone to come and admire his achievements. That provoked a few funny looks when losing public toilets!

It is funny what you will do for your kids or grandkids in public. I agree that potty training boys is harder so I don't blame you for doing what ever it is that helps. My son was one that had to show everyone in the room what he had done.

I am potty training my daughter at the moment and we have to clap and congratulate her for using her potty. We say things like clever girl and well done and she has a big smile on her face. It is really cute.

oh yes, potty training is an adventure you'll never forget! My son had help with his "stand-up" potty training by my two brothers who were six and eight at the time. They made a real production of it and explained it much better than I or even my husband could. My son got the gist of it quite quickly, and he even named the act of urination after his uncles. He called it "JoeBrian", as in "I gotta go "JoeBrian!" At least everyone in the shops didn't know what was up...

I wish no-one had ever shown my little one that it's possible for boys to go standing up. He wants to stand up like Dad now of course, and would rather wee on his own feet that sit on the potty.

When my son was about three, my mum took my son and I to a luncheon at a Mexican restaurant. There was a big fountain in the room and my son was fascinated by it. When luncheon was over I was busy getting my daughter (who was just an infant at the time) ready to go and mum turned her back on my son for just a moment. A big shout of laughter erupted in the room as my son happily weed in the fountain.

You will have to make dad sit, so that your little one wants to copy that too. Sorry for lowering the tone, but my husband is instructed to 'sit' at night because it is much quieter!

Since we have strayed on to the subject of children and toilet matters, it reminds me of an incident when my oldest was three. I had just gone to the public toilets at the shopping center, leaving my daughter (who didn't need to go) with dad. My daughter then changed her mind and wanted to go, so my husband told her to run and catch up with mum. She didn't find me and when I came out I was horrified that my husband had managed to lose her. He went into the gents in case she had gone in there by mistake. There she was, apparently she had used the cubicle, washed her hands and then tapped a man on the back to asked him to please flush for her because she couldn't reach!

That is a precious story! And your daughter washing her hands without being told to...I was still telling my son to wash his hands way up in his teens.

I had a friend with a child who liked to 'go' in the garden. To prevent him from sneaking out and encourage him to use the toilet, the locked the door. Then they discovered him trying to do it out of the cat flap!!!
