I was speaking to an old friend I hadn't talked to for a year or two, and the subject of bingo came about, since that was something we used to do together when she lived near me. She said that she has been teaching her little ones their letters and numbers with bingo. Apparently they have a little bingo game quite often and she said the kids picked up on it really quickly and know their letters and numbers much better than their other playfellows. I never considered it before, but I think it's a brilliant idea!
I recall playing Bingo with Welsh words back in primary school. Although we didn't shout Welsh when we won, we had to shout Ty which is Welsh for house. It was good fun.
It's an excellent way of getting kids to recognise and match words or numbers. You could start of with showing them the word / number to match, and work up to saying it so that they have to read it.
I use an animals picture version with my youngest just now.
I did that with my sons and they loved it. I printed out bingo cards with letters and numbers on them and we would actually put three pennies in a pot and whoever won Bingo got the pot.
Tater, that's a grand idea. When my daughter was little, she would have done nearly anything for a shiny penny (we used to call her Magpie). Once she learned the value of money, pennies weren't good enough, but a pile of pennies she would have gone for.
