Default good movies for young teens

We are arranging a pizza and movie night for some young friends of ours, aged 12-14. We'd like to find a movie that their parents would approve of, but won't put the kids to sleep with boredom. In the past we've shown them The Secret of Roan Inish and The Station Master, both of which were well received. Have you any suggestions for me?

I want to say a good comedy, but it seems like even most comedy's these days have things that some parents find offensive.

Just so, trick-r-treat. We were trying to think of some old classic comedies the kids might like but they might not understand all the aspects of the movie. I thought of the great old Cary Grant movie Arsenic and Old Lace, but as that movie is supposed to take place at Halloween, we're going to save that. I was wondering if they might like a silent movie like Buster Keaton or Charlie Chaplin, but I don't know if they'd sit through that...

You would be surprised - my kids love that type of thing! Maybe because it is so different. It's worth a try!

You're right, I think we'll give silent movies a go. I wouldn't be surprised if some of those kids never heard of a silent movie!

Some of the Harold Lloyd type stuff keeps my son in stitches, so I think you'll do well with a silent movie. Mr Bean is silent of course, so it won't be a completely new idea to them!

Green, I love Harold Loyd!!Those dangerous stunts he did were amazing and funny at the same time. I had completely forgotten him; Mr Bean is another excellent idea! Thx much!

My son's love Mr. Bean. You guys have some great ideas that I never would have thought of. I think I just might introduce my sons to some of the silent movies. They are totally unaware of them.

Well, I kind of got overruled about the silent movies, and we are showing some basketball movie called "Hoosiers". One of the fathers came to have a chat with us because his daughter had misunderstood and told him that we were going to show a movie called "Hooters". It was too funny!
I'm not giving up on a silent movie night, though...

I think a basketball movie would put me to sleep, but maybe the organisers could be excused to watch Harold Lloyd in the kitchen?
