This site was obtained by Top Rank in the early 90s, it was aformer retail outlet, Top Rank had a site approx half a mile down Park Road which was a former cinema, they were looking for FLAT sites at the time. They convered the retail outlet to a 600 seater hall and then closed the original site.
Sadly the new site never took off , and under some cost cutting measures in the early 2000s they closed the site, along with several others in the Liverpool area.

Ah, another one bites the dust - I think the government should be doing something to protect our history and culture from being turned into shopping centres and apartment blocks

Toxteth Mecca was actually called Dingle Mecca. (The Dingle is part of Toxteth). It replaced Prince's Park Top Rank Bingo (the former Gaumont cinema).
Both buildings being in Park Road, Dingle, Liverpool.
The 1937 Gaumont went over to Top Rank Bingo in 1966, and closed when Mecca opened in April 1997.
The new bingo hall was a conversion of a 'Superstore', and not purpose-built as
contemporary advertisements claimed.
It was built in the 1970s by the Co-op as Leo's, later renamed Pioneer, and closed down in July 1996 to be converted into Mecca Bingo which was opened on 3 April 1997.
I cannot confirm that it closed in February 2009, but it certainly has closed.
May 2010. Hoardings appeared round the site in preparation for the demolition of the
building. A new Tesco 'Superstore' is to be built on the site.
A 'temporary' post office is still operating in what was at one time said to become the main entrance to the bingo. This explains why the steel canopy seems too large for the post office.

I think it was before, myself. If I remember rightly, Tesco made a pre-planning-application announcement, months before submitting an actual Planning Application.

Tesco were distributing leaflets in the area in mid-October 2007, and the Bingo Hall had already closed by then.
