    Default Mistaken Identity

I took my son to a car boot sale today and he bought some old pre decimal coins. As we drove back in the car he asked why we used to have Lenin's face on our coins, it wasn't Lenin of course, it was Edward VII! I wonder what they teach them in history at school.

You do have to wonder. Those are people that are polar opposites. You must have been like "What?".

Buying those few old coins has helped to make history a little more personal for him. He has an 1896 penny and I was able to explain that his great x3 grandfather would have been in his late 60's when that penny was made, but he had to continue working until he died because there was no state pension in those days. Just the workhouse, and he wouldn't have wanted to go there because he was orphaned when he was three and he was sent to the workhouse until he was apprenticed to a shoemaker.

That sounds like a great way for him to learn history and collect something at the same time. Do you think that he will start a collection of old coins?

I think boys like to collect things, he already has a stash of fossils, sharks teeth, interesting stones, super hero models, transformers and countless different kinds of collectible cards so I don't suppose a collection of coins will make much difference to the general chaos in his room.

Now that you say that you are so right. I have two sons and they are constantly collecting things. Right now my youngest is into the Pokemon cards.

My son especially used to love foreign coins as a boy. His dad would pick them up at sales here and there and they loved researching them. Baseball cards were also a fave of theirs. They could go on about them for hours. I think it's true that boys like to collect more than girls.

Ooops, hit enter to quickly. I wanted to say that what my daughter was interested in collecting was clothes and shoes!

My second daughter is like that, I tell her she has more shoes than Imelda Marcos and she looks at me as blankly and asks "who?" I must be getting old!

I recently tidied up my room and found loads of coins. Being a lady I don't like to collect things that I can't wear. I took them to the bank where they have those machines that count the money. I was spilling them out, when something caught my eye. I was a foreign coin, then some more. I don't know how I missed so many. Being as I don't collect, I put them in the charity box, so now someone is better off, and my room is coin free!
