My kids had the responsibility of straightening up the house when my husband and I both worked. I know how disappointing and angry it feels to come home to such a mess. Our solution, we turned right around and went out to dinner and came back, said hi and turned on the telly. We only had to do that a couple of times and it never happened again
. (It seemed our son always learned better if food/no food was involved...)
