The Scourge Of Bingo Halls?

Friday, Dec. 2nd 2016 1:25 PM

Bingo Hall Slots

Are B3 Machines
A Scourge?

B3 machines, a harmless distraction during session breaks or the scourge of bingo halls? Well, according to the Christian Institute, they constitute ‘legalised mugging’. Recent legislation has allowed the pay outs on free standing slot machine to increase in both bingo halls and casinos. Great news, but, at the same time the machines are allowed to accept higher stakes (potentially bad news for some…).

They noted that as reported by the BBC that the machines are positioned within clubs so that patrons cannot cannot enter without passing them (perhaps in the same way ‘impulse buys’ are located at the checkouts of supermarkets). Underlying this is the notion that problem gamblers will find it difficult to pass without stopping and punting.

Mecca Bingo’s Lucky Black Cats

Thursday, Oct. 27th 2016 4:47 PM

I always thought that black cats were an unlucky portent of doom, specifically because of their preferred location at the heels of witch, or riding on the back of a broomstick with their mistress flying across a full moon filled night.

Looks like I’m completely wrong though, as historically they are seen as good omens. But this may also be a regional thing, maybe Scottish black cats are luckier than Welsh black cats (I’m sure one crossing your path used to be bad luck!). However, Mecca Bingo in The Forge, Glasgow are taking this literally by adding two black cats to their team in the hope that it will bring the club and it’s players luck.

Saddle Up For Western Bingo At Knotty Ash

Thursday, Oct. 13th 2016 9:48 AM

Mecca Bingo in Knotty Ash are ramping up the entertainment levels this weekend with a Wild West night. We’re guessing that the event is to attract younger players as the star attraction will be a real bucking bronco.

Players will be able to compete to see who can stay the longest on the mechanical bull, hang on to your hats for that one, (Stetson of course!). Starting at 6pm October 15th in the Prescot Road club, there will be cowboy cocktails, country music, and the bar will be done out like a saloon.

Luda Bingo Hall Planned For Walsall

Monday, Oct. 10th 2016 5:58 AM

Mecca Bingo is not only one of the biggest online brands, but they are also very active on the high street, with bingo hall scattered across the country. At the end of August, the company submitted plans for a new type of hall to Walsall Council’s planning committee. We have now heard that the committee has advised their officers to give the plan the go-ahead, meaning local residents will soon have a new place to play their favourite games called Luda Bingo.

This Luda Bingo hall, which is destined for the Park Street venue, will feature a cafe and an electric lounge complete with jackpot machines. The Rank Group are reported to have spent over £12 million on the lease for the site and will spend another £900,000 to refurbish the units that have sat vacant on the plot for quite some time.

Gala Sell All Its Land Based Bingo Halls

Wednesday, Oct. 28th 2015 11:28 AM

Over the years we’ve followed the ebb and flow of the retail industry’s biggest players. There’s been a number of purchases and sales, but this latest move from Gala is possibly one of the biggest we’ve seen here. In one fell swoop Gala has sold its entire portfolio of high-street bingo halls. That’s 130 halls with more than 1.1 million members, a snip at £241m.

The halls were bought by the Caledonia investment group, whom also own stakes in other leisure industry businesses such as Park Holidays. The full details of the sale are here so we won’t go into detail on the background of the story, but look at some of the potential implications and speculate on potential issues.

Neon Bingo

Thursday, Oct. 15th 2015 3:55 PM

We recently recapped on the continuing success of Rebel Bingo as an alternative night for younger people who like to mix their bingo dabbing with a bit of clubbing fun. Their longevity as what started off as a bit of a lark has even caught the attention of the major bingo chain Mecca Bingo.

Now there’s a new kid on the block, Desperados, who are launching Neon Bingo, a night of bingo inspired frolics in Dublin. We don’t usually cover non-UK bingo news, however, we’re making an exception here as we are wondering if there is a bit of a movement afoot.

New Face Of Bingo?

Wednesday, Sep. 23rd 2015 12:32 PM

One of the biggest problems with the offline bingo industry over the past few years has been the perceived ageing of its population of players. Whether the real or not, the perception is there, of players sporting horn rimmed glasses, their bingo wings flapping in strip-lit garish halls, and this may be enough to put off potential young players.

Even though the industry received a tax reprieve last year from the chancellor, which does appear to have had a positive impact, the ‘blue rinse’ image of bingo is still a very real problem, one that needs to be dealt with.
