Which Bingo's 2007 Online Bingo Awards

It's that time of year, Which Bingo has launched their 2007 online Bingo awards. Alongside the international award, there's also the second UK only award. Which Bingo's Phil Fraser says of them: "There are some really great bingo sites out there doing a fantastic job. Once a year, Bingo players have a forum to register their appreciation of the fun and enjoyment these sites supply. We are very excited about these awards, particularly the UK one." You can find out more about the awards and cast your vote here - you have until New Years Eve to get your vote in.

Now, as much fun as these sort of awards are, they should also be taken with a pinch of salt. Any awards decided by public voting online often generate a lot more light than heat. Why am I grousing again you ask? Well, these sort of awards are rarely an accurate indicator of quality. Instead they indicate which online Bingo site is able to best muster their users en masse to go and vote for them. This is not necessarily an indicator of the site's overall worth and doesn't really tell you anything about why the site deserves such a title.

On top of that, many of the sites that originate these sort of public voting awards aren't doing so for the public's benefit, they're doing it for their own. They're rewarded with a nice lot of publicity, email addresses and back links for their trouble, which is a lot more value to them. Don't get me wrong, I'm not singling out Which Bingo, they are one of a number of Bingo sites that run awards of similar schemes. Which Bingo has some great info and is run by people who know their stuff, but this voting doesn't do the industry justice. It's not just in Bingo either, its a wider problem online that these sort of awards are decided by such an insecure and open to abuse method as public voting.

I'd rather see a panel put together consisting of actual Bingo players and people with a background in the industry. They would have a set of best practice and player focused criteria to grade each site by, and put them through rigorous testing over a period time to come to these sort of decisions. I know that's a much bigger job, but frankly, given the lengths some online Bingo sites will go to get market share whether deserved or not, it would be a much more reliable yard stick to quality than the current voting system. That said, don't let me put you off, you can vote for your favourite here.
