Monday, September 10, 2007You can help but have noticed the concerns surrounding the new 2005 Gambling Act and the relaxation in advertising rules. Some groups fear it could breed a new wave of problem gamblers, lulled by TV and press adverts in problem gambling. In response to the new atmosphere, a new site - Gamble Aware - has been set up by a charity to educate people on the pitfalls of online gaming.
The site has been developed by a task force of people from UK problem gambling charities like Gamcare and Responsibility in Gambling Trust and other institutions such as the DCMS and National Lottery Commission and is packed with advice on how to spot problems, get treatment and get help.
There are some interesting self test features at the site. The Fact or Fiction test is particularly worth a look. It tests some of the myths that gamblers tend to believe in (and coming from a Bingo background, I've heard most of them!) There's also a self-assessment test that you can take to gauge if you have issues you need addressing. It will be interesting to see if the gamble aware URL starts turning up on online gaming adverts like the Drink Aware one you see on alcohol adverts.
