Two Scottish Halls Set To Close

The Banffshire Journal has a report that the Regal Ambassador Bingo Club in Macduff is set to close on Sunday 17th June. The club is the latest in a string of closures at independent Bingo halls in Scotland following the first year of the smoking ban. It's interesting to see that the ban alone has not been blamed for the closure. Remo Caira, the man behind the independent club said, "the smoking ban has been the final nail in the coffin - but admissions have been dwindling over the past five years."

I think that's a telling comment. I've made my opinions on this known for a while - Bingo's narrow focus on an ageing and unhealthy demographic is the cause for many of it's woes, not just the smoking ban. The ban in a sense brings to a head the lack of investment in building a new audience for the game.

The article goes on to mention that the final party will be a double header, as members from the Macduff club will be taken to the Ambassador in Nairn which is also closing the same evening. It will be one hell of a send-off I'm certain, and once more that unique old club atmosphere and culture will be gone for ever. It's a real shame as once gone, you never get that back.
