Sunday, February 18, 2007And continuing the doom and gloom that's fast taking over the Bingo world, news from Lothian that the Hayweights Club in Musselburgh will be closing down today. The final session will be played tonight when there's a party for the remaining members.
It's a real shame this ban is contributing to the problems of many of the smaller clubs out there. To me, they epitomise the appeal of the game and should be cherished. However, I think it's fair to say it's not just the smoking ban that's to blame in the demise of these smaller clubs, it's more a symptom of the modernisation of the game.
As a simplistic example, many smaller clubs shut down around here, long before there was even talk of a smoking ban. The local circumstances that contributed to the demise of a number of smaller clubs was the fact that many bigger (and blander) purpose built clubs were built locally that took the players away from the smaller clubs. It's a whole economy of scale issue.
Smaller clubs have always been under threat up and down the country, and it's always sad to see one have to close. As I've said before, when they go, there's no bringing back the things that made them special. Number's up for bingo hall
