Thursday, May 11, 2006There's a great article at the Yorkshire Today website that looks at the shady part Bingo played in the funding of the two main parties during the post WW2 years. If you thought the scandals around funding and loans today was pretty shocking, it doesn't hold a candle to the lenghts parties went too in raising funds through the game of Bingo.
"Research by a Yorkshire academic has revealed both Tories and socialists made the 1940s equivalent of millions of pounds by finding ways around the gaming laws to host bingo sessions during the illicit gambling fever of the post-war years. Police warned both parties in the mid-1950s that they were breaking the law following complaints by anti-gambling leagues and a number of court cases, according to historian Professor Keith Laybourn, of Huddersfield University"
I think the article points at how important the Gaming Act of 1968 was, if nothing else, to stop the politicians ending up in jail for Bingo! A book is in the plans, that should be interesting. Read More...
