Bonkers Mecca Bingo

Friday, Sep. 1st 2017 4:14 PM

Are Mecca Bingo in the process of cracking ‘it’? By ‘it’ we mean one of the biggest problems facing land based bingo operators, how to get young people through the doors and engaged in what is considered a bit of an ageing past-time. Perhaps inspired by the success of Bongos Bingo, Mecca Bingo are launching a Bonkers Bingo night at their Burton bingo hall.

Young people are promised a night of fun, which includes food and cocktails with shots, beers and burgers. Obviously food and a tipple are available on regular bingo nights, so there’s also a DJ. And to make the youngsters feel at home, there’s going to be a change to the traditional bingo calls. Little Mix replacing number six is the only one we’ve heard of so far. But, we’re guessing that there are going to be some saucy new calls!

New Bingo Hall
For Dudley

The wheels of the bingo industry recovery vehicle may be moving slowly since the change in bingo taxation, but they are moving surely. The latest news is that there will (hopefully) be a new bingo hall opened in Dudley as part of a gambling facility.

We say hopefully, as planning permission has not yet been approved buy local authorities. The 450 seat bingo hall will be located on the ground floor offering 14 bingo sessions per week. Upstairs will be the casino, named Casino 36. Casino 36 opened a casino in Wolverhampton in 2016 at a cost of over £7 million.

Bingo Hall
Fire

We’ve sadly just heard of another closed bingo hall catching fire. Top Ten Bingo in Southwick, Sunderland closed circa 2013, but that hasn’t lessened the impact felt by the local community. Closed bingo halls are often cherished landmarks for locals. Their presence often serves of a reminder of good times past, and many people find the familiarity of their surroundings comforting.

Also, land based bingo has made a bit of a resurgence of late. After many years of decline the industry appears to have regained a solid footing in the face of the smoking ban and online bingo. We are seeing new clubs open which may be in part due to a change in bingo taxation.

Land Bingo Is Alive And Well!

Saturday, Mar. 11th 2017 10:59 AM

The past couple of decades have been tumultuous for the land based bingo industry. The only real reprieve came from the taxation reduction in the 2015 budget which was literally a lifeline for many struggling bingo halls.

One main perceived threat to bingo halls has been the growth in online bingo. We say ‘perceived’ as we have yet to see any research which ‘proves’ that Foxy and friends are actually stealing customers from the halls. If the internet ‘broke’ overnight would we really see the bingo halls being flooded with desperate new players or, are online players a different species altogether?

Bingo Money Laundering?

Friday, Feb. 24th 2017 11:02 AM

It seems that Mecca Bingo are vigilant when it comes to ensuring that money spent in their clubs is not the result of criminal activity. They recently banned a player from their Greenock hall under suspicion of money laundering. But, have they got it right?

Mecca employees ‘swooped’ on Linda Bannon while she was playing bingo in their club, apparently in front of everyone. They gave her the opportunity to prove that her money was from legitimate sources by suggesting that she provide proof in the form of bank statements, a pay slip or a P60 tax form, which she declined.

Bongo’s Bingo Still Going Strong

Saturday, Feb. 18th 2017 10:14 AM

A while back we commented on the ‘fad’ of bingo events in night clubs. We use the word fad because at the time it did on face value appear to be something that would not last.

A couple of years on, and bingo club nights are still going strong. OK, so it’s not bingo as we know it, but, it is still bingo(ish). It is however keeping the word in the national consciousness, and more importantly, in the minds of the young, who are potential bingo players of the future.

What Would You Do With Massive Bingo Win?

Saturday, Feb. 4th 2017 2:50 PM

We’re really pleased that land based bingo is still notching up the big wins in the clubs, as just like online bingo, the the allure of a life changing win is a real draw that keeps the players playing bingo. The latest big land based winner is an anonymous granny who bagged and impressive bingo win of £233,000 at Mecca Bingo in Sale.

The National Game, which the lucky lady won is a linked game that is played across clubs in the UK simultaneously. This means that you are unfortunately playing against thousands and thousands of other players, not just the few hundred that may be sat around you in your club.
