It’s official, Britain is now completely singing bonkers! The Voice is back, the X Factor has never gone away, and even Stars In Their Eyes has made a comeback with Harry Hill as the new presenter, although he replaces ‘Cowell-like’ TV judge nastiness with his own brand of surreal cheekiness and japery.
And not one to miss a trick, Mecca Bingo has jumped on the bandwagon with their own Star Search competition which is launched across their UK clubs. Mecca have got a suitable Hollywood holiday prize for the winner, and you don’t even have to leave your living room to enter the first round of the competition as long as you’ve got something to record your golden voice.
This competition could be a stroke of genius, tapping into to a massively popular cultural phenomenon may be just the sort of thing that bingo needs to get new players through the doors. If Gala weren’t so busy at the moment with their pre-flotation club sales they’d probably be following suit as well.
Mecca clubs have already started round one of the search, with auditions taking place between now and February 22nd. Some clubs will be running several auditions, but there is no club specific calendar on the website. So, if you are interested in attending an audition you will need to contact your nearest club to find out when they are holding auditions, or to find out which other nearby clubs can fit you in to their schedule.
However, you don’t need to leave your house to compete in the first round if you don’t want to, you can simply upload a video via the Mecca Bingo Star Search page which you can access here. The page already has loads of entries up, so you can check out the competition.
If you are initially entering online, you will need to create a YouTube video of your performance before you enter. Once you’ve done that all you have to do to sign up is go to the page above, enter your details, and they will get back to you. Once you’ve entered online your local club may call you in for an audition, and as a thank you for entering they’ll throw in a free game of bingo and some food.
The final is in Blackpool in June, the talented winner will receive a trip to Hollywood, including hotel and £2,000 in cash. Regional winners will each receive £500 cash.
We’re looking forward to a lot of caterwauling and hamming it up, as well as some new genuine talent. Voting opens online on 1 February 2015, and we’re looking forward to casting our vote. Good luck to all entrants, even if you don’t win give yourself a pat on the back for getting up there and doing it!
